OSRS F2P Smithing Training Guide

This post represents the Free-to-play version of our original OSRS Smithing Guide. All of the methods found in this guide can be used for training smithing in free-to-play worlds.

Fastest F2P Smithing Training

Below you will see the methods used to gain the fastest experience and 1-99 smithing in f2p.

The Knight’s Sword: levels 1-29

Completing the Knights Sword quest is the most efficient method for early game smithing levels. The quest rewards players with 12,725 and has no smithing requirements to complete. Therefore, it can be used to skip the early levels and jump from level 1 to 29.

If you are interested in completing this quest, be sure to check out our Knights Sword Quest Guide.

Bronze Platebodies: levels 29-33

Smithing bronze platebodies is the fastest free to play smithing xp between levels 29 and 33. 445 bronze bars are required to go from level 29 to 33 smithing.

Iron Platebodies: levels 33-48

Next, free to play players should smith iron platebodies from level 33 to 48. Each one will provide 125 experience and the total bars needed to go from 33-48 is 2,590. This will cost around 500k gold.

Steel Platebodies: levels 48-68

Between level 48 and 68 smithing, players should make steel platebodies. Each one will provide 187.5 smithing xp. A total of 13,920 steel bars are required, which is an effective cost of around 3-4 million gold.

Mithril Platebodies: levels 68-88

From levels 68-88 the fastest f2p smithing exp is gained by creating mithril platebodies. Each one gives 250 experience. This results in an effective hourly rate of around 150,000 to 175,000 smithing xp.

A total of 75,615 mithril bars are required and this will cost the player around 10 million gold. The cost can be reduced by a few million if high alching the platebodies.

Adamant Platebodies: levels 88-99

Smithing Adamant Platebodies in f2p rewards around 220,000 smithing exp per hour. The method should be used from level 88 until level 99 smithing. The method is slightly profitable, depending on Grand Exchange prices and you should at least expect to break even.

Alternative F2p Smithing Training

Below are some alternative training methods for f2p players. They may not be the quickest, but provide some alternative benefits.

Smelting Bars

Smelting ores to bars can be a good afk method for training the skill. That will also provide some small levels of profit. The Edgeville furnace is the best place to do this due to its close proximity to a bank. The best option is usually silver ore as it is one ore per bar, meaning players get 1 minute 25 seconds of AFK time per inventory.

However, these methods are significantly slower and the profit made from them is generally not worth the additional time it will take to level.

Rune Items: level 98-99

Smithing rune items is actually the fastest method of training smithing in f2p. But, it is significantly more annoying to do. As players must boost their level to 99 with a dwarven stout. The smithing boost only lasts one minute meaning you need to constantly replenish the level.

Some items such as the rune platebody provide huge losses in gp, while others can be profitable. Always check grand exchange prices for the best items, but rune platelegs, plateskirts and 2h swords are usually good performers. High alching the items will significantly reduce losses and/or improve profit.
