OSRS F2P Ranged Training Guide

This post represents the Free-to-play version of our original OSRS Ranged Guide. All of the methods found in this guide can be used for training ranged in free-to-play worlds.

Optimal Gear Setup and Progression

The amount of variety in terms of ranged gear available to free to play players is very limited. Green Dragon hide armour will be your best in slot at level 40 ranged and defence. While the amulet of power, maple shortbow and adamant arrows are also important. See a full breakdown of the progression for f2p ranged gear in the image below.

Which Ranged Attack Style to use?

You will notice the bow you are using to train with has three attack styles; Accurate, Rapid and Longrange. From levels 1-30 it is best to use accurate due to the +3 ranged bonus. However, from level 30 on this becomes less significant and it is better to use rapid. Longrange is never recommended for training.

Range Ammunition in Free-to-play

Free to play does not have the luxury of members items such as the Ava’s. Therefore, the quantities of ammunition used are far greater. As every arrow fired will be lost. The type of arrow you will want to use will be dependant on your budget. Adamant arrows are best in slot and worthwhile if you can afford it. However, Mithril Arrows are the next best thing and very cheap.

Fastest F2P Range Training

Below you will see the methods used to gain the fastest experience and 1-99 range in f2p.

Low-level Training

When starting out players will want to train on low level monsters. NPCs that have negative or low ranged defence and no real offensive threat. Examples of low level monsters to train ranged on in F2P include:

  • Seagulls
  • Cows
  • Goblins
  • Chickens
  • Monks
  • Barbarians

Mid-level Training

As you progress to the mid-level stage, you’ll want to move to monsters that have a higher hitpoints threshold. This will allow you to stay in combat for longer. You’ll also be able to benefit from improved loot. Some good mid-tier monsters for range training in free to play include:
